Interview with Nip/Tuck Star Julian McMahon
When you hear about these weird surgeries, even though they are based in reality, are you ever shocked?
?Obviously, the more you do the show, the less shocked you become, but I?m never not shocked. But surgery?s not in my life, except for this show, so to think about opening somebody up and putting their loved one?s ashes in their breasts just sounds out of control to me. I?m shocked. It wanes a little after four years, but I?m still [shocked].
I love reading this show ?cause I love what I get to play. We just shot stuff the other day which was just absolutely out of control. I think it comes up in the third or fourth episode. Christian gets involved in this sex tape that gets leaked on the Internet, and it?s just hysterical. I love to be able to push that stuff as far as we can. If they?re giving us the opportunity to do it, let?s take it. I love the fact that [the audience] is surprised every time [they] see it, and I want [them] to be continually surprised. That?s one of the great things about Nip/Tuck, and I think it?s one of the things that really separates it from other productions.?
When you get to the end of Christian?s story, do you think it will ultimately be redemptive or self-destructive?
?I think it will be both. If you really do go back in Christian?s past, it is redemptive, continually. It doesn?t mean that he doesn?t destroy it in the next five minutes, but that?s part of the show, and I like that part of the show.?
Do you ever get a chance to go back to Australia?
?Not that often, and that?s only because of my work. I?m not really a missing kind of guy. I just don?t have that thing in my genes, unless it?s involving my daughter. I love the culture, I love the people, a lot of my family?s back there and a lot of my great friends, so I like to get back, if I can, but I just don?t get the opportunity. With this show and with the movies that I?ve done over the last three or four years, I haven?t had the time. And, also, I have a daughter who is in school, and you have to do school breaks. It just gets a little tougher. But my mom comes here a couple of times a year, my sisters come here a couple of times a year, and my friends come over. As an actor, I?ve been here for probably 15 years. For the first eight years, I was always going back. Now, it?s their turn to come this way.?
