Further Notes on Location Photography for Female Art Nudes

Careful planning is always necessary for a successful outside location shoot, away from the home and studio. This will require a sourced location with lots of privacy, as both the female model and you, must be relaxed enough to concentrate on photographing female art nudes.

What I like about location shooting is that it can free up the mind to create naturally lit sensual female art nudes, whereas if you're in the studio, the equipment and its paraphernalia can clog up the process. Also by pre-planning, you can quickly move from one pose to another

Workings in private locations off the beaten track are much better than say, one next to a well known foot path. And as for beach shoots, these should only occur on private beaches away from the public. Basically, it must be private land.

Always stay on the right side of the law at all times, and remember not to trespass on private land and don't climb any fences to reach a secluded location. And certainly do not take risks in countries where nudity is considered a criminal act or disrespectful – there is nothing to gain, only woe.

Timing: Once you have your location in mind you must visit the place at several different times to find out when the light is at its best. You maybe surprised to find, for example the light, is better at twilight.

Flash: To flash or not to flash is the question. I find that it pays to carry one, or to use to camera's built in version. It's very useful for fill-in, if you are using a strong backlight. Also, if you use the flash as the main light, it will probably darken the surrounding sky for added effect in your photo.

Consider the model: In warm weather, be aware of mosquitoes, midgets and flies. Ask the model to bring her preferred insect repellent to use if required and make sure it is on hand at all times.

Other basics to take heed of before exposing your nude female model to the elements are to check the ground for biting ants, stinging plants like nettles and sharp pieces of wood. Make sure the ground is sufficiently clean for your nude model to work safely on. If there is anything the model is not happy with then it might be better to try a different location. So try to have an alternative location in mind.

You don't want your model to be nude for very long (our summers don't seem to be what they once were!). So make sure she wears clothing that's easy to remove and put back on, for example, an oversized shirt and jogging pants wouldn't look out of place as you walk to and from the location. So before she undresses, discuss the pose and check the composition, lighting and camera settings. Ask the model to disrobe and to get into the pose. A few quick shots later and the model is clothed again, while you both discuss the next shots. Obviously the clothing should be loose enough not to leave elastic marks on the body, as you might have to wait for them to disappear to get the image you want.

Finally, photographing women (semi or nude) outside the studio environment to create artistic studies of female nudes can be very challenging and rewarding; the former is fraught with repetition and homage's to famous images, and the latter, a joy that you created an image that started off as just an idea.
