How to Troubleshoot a Hotpoint Electric Dryer

    Dryer Does Not Start

    • 1). Plug in the power cord of your dryer securely if your dryer will not start.

    • 2). Look for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses connected to your dryer. Your dryer may use two circuit breakers or fuses. Blown fuses appear damaged or have darkened windows. A tripped circuit breaker will have a switch turned "Off" or a red button sticking out. Press the red button in or turn the circuit breaker switch "On." Replace a blown fuse if necessary.

    • 3). Close the dryer door fully, and push the "Start" switch. The dryer will not turn on if the door is not fully closed.

    Long Drying Times

    • 1). Pull out the lint filter, and wipe it clean before each load. Your dryer will not operate correctly with a clogged lint filter. Moisten your fingers with water, and then wipe starting at the filter's corner moving downward to the other corner. Insert your vacuum cleaner suction hose into the lint filter opening to clean it out monthly.

    • 2). Check for a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse. Your dryer can continue tumbling without heat if one breaker trips if your dryer uses two breakers or fuses.

    • 3). Identify the items you placed in your dryer. If you're drying items that hold more moisture, such as large towels, these will take longer to dry.

    • 4). Dry only one washer load at a time, rather than combining washer loads in the dryer. Too many items in your dryer will not dry properly.

    • 5). Clean out clogs from your dryer's exhaust ducting, and remove any kinks if your Hotpoint dryer has flexible ducting. Locate the ducting at the rear of your dryer. Unplug the dryer, remove the duct, and then insert your vacuum cleaner wand as far as possible into the duct to suck out lint and debris. Repeat this process at the other end of the duct. Reconnect the dryer once you have completed. Clean the exhaust ducting at least once yearly. (See Reference 1, pg 13 under "Care and Cleaning" and Reference 2)

    Linty Clothing

    • 1). Clean the lint from the lint filter if you see lint on your clothing. Locate the lint filter at the front of your Hotpoint dryer when you open the door. Clean the lint filter before each load.

    • 2). Sort your clothing properly. Some clothing, such as chenille, produces more lint; dry these with like clothing.

    • 3). Empty the pockets from all of your clothes before you wash them. Wet tissue and other items create lint during the drying process.
