How to Rate Physical Rehabilitation Facilities
- 1). Visit the facility before making any decisions. Follow up with a repeat visit during a different shift to make sure that the quality of care is consistent throughout the day. Look around the entire facility and insist on seeing a sample patient room. Look for negative indicators, such as foul odor, dirty appearance, disheveled employees or unkempt patients. Observe the workers throughout the building, and note whether they make eye contact and smile, indicating they are satisfied to work there and proud of the facility.
- 2). Observe a therapy session. Take note of the tenor of the therapy room, that is whether patients seem engaged and involved or if there is little activity. Research possible interventions for the patient prior to talking to the therapist, and ask if the facility is able to provide treatments you are expecting. Speak with the rehab director, and inquire about the interventions the facility provides. Explain any concerns you have about the patient and her therapy, and ask the rehabilitation director what he would do to intervene. Check out the physical therapy equipment the facility uses, including parallel bars, standing frame, weights and modalities such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound.
- 3). Meet with the financial department to discuss insurance arrangements. Ask whether the patient's insurance is accepted and about any charges you may be responsible for. Bring all insurance cards with you, including long-term care coverage or union-based secondary insurances. These secondary insurances can have a significant impact on your financial responsibility. Ask the financial manager about the arrangements for the patient if he requires permanent placement because insurances cover different costs depending upon the level of care being provided.
