Four Dental Implants Stories From New York City Residents Whose Lives Have Been Changed, PART 2

Welcome to the second installment and second dental implant story of this four-part article series. Previously, Geraldine Adams (62) explained her journey to us, which involved having a problematic tooth replaced with a conventional dental bridge. She struggled with acute discomfort and difficulty maintaining good oral hygiene for over three years before going to her dentist in New York to have her bridge replaced with dental implants. Geraldine reports feeling so much happier and more confident and comfortable with her new teeth.

Now, let's see what New York City girl Alex Oberholser has to say and how getting new teeth with dental implants saved her from a life of hiding her smile.

The Dental Implant Story of Alex Oberholser, 28

"In an accident of ridiculously epic proportions, I tripped and fell mouth-first into a stair railing, which shattered my two front teeth. I was rushed to my Brooklyn dentist who then sent me straight to a dental implant surgeon in New York City to receive immediate treatment. After cleaning me up and taking X-rays, he explained that what was left of my teeth would need to be removed and that I'd be looking at getting two new front teeth. He explained the various dental options I had, but given the location of the teeth, he recommended that I select implants for their greater aesthetic value, function and longevity.

"I barely remember the procedure because I was sedated and treated for the pain, but when I eventually emerged from the fog, I was almost confused to feel my teeth back in place. It was as though I'd dreamed the whole thing, but instead of waking up and looking at the ceiling in my Brooklyn apartment, I was looking into the face of the implant dentist and his assistant. They explained that my surgery had gone really well and that my dental implants, which were now permanently in place, were supporting temporary tooth crowns. I was just so happy and so relieved to see that I looked normal again, after having had my two front teeth smashed out my face!

"My brother took me home and I spent the rest of the day and night sleeping off the trauma and sedative medications. My mouth was pretty sore from the accident, but the dental implant dentist gave me painkillers, which did the trick. The next morning, I was up and about and was able to eat some soft fruit and yoghurt. I was amazed at how natural it felt eating with my new teeth implants. They really did and still do feel like real teeth. After a week, the pain in my mouth had all but disappeared and I was eating a more varied diet without any difficulty or discomfort. I returned to my usual routine and before I knew it, it was time for my follow-up appointment.

"I made the journey to New York City and had my temporary crowns removed and replaced with my new permanent teeth, which were virtually indistinguishable from my old natural teeth! In spite of having had the most traumatic accident of my life, I'm here today with dental implants that look, work and feel just like real teeth and few people can tell the difference. I love to smile, so having my smile back is something I'll forever be grateful for."
