How to Wash Lint out of Knits
- 1). Sort your laundry into two piles: one for lights and one for darks. Make an additional pile for fabrics prone to giving off lint such as towels, socks, fleece and flannel. Wash each pile separately.
- 2). Turn your washing machine on a normal cycle. Check the labels of the items -- if they can tolerate it, hot water is the best temperature setting for removing lint.
- 3). Allow the basin of your washing machine to fill one-fourth of water and add 1 cup of distilled white vinegar, along with your laundry detergent.
- 4). Submerge your linty knits into your washing machine when the water is halfway filled. Do not overcrowd the basin, pack the close loosely so they have room to agitate. Close the lid and begin the cycle.
- 5). Stop your machine when it gets to the rinse cycle. Add an additional 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the basin. Close the lid and allow your washing machine to run through to completion.
- 6). Clean the lint trap of your dryer before putting the knits in. Tie an old pair of pantyhose in a knot so they don't get tangled around your clothing. Put the pantyhose in the dryer so any remaining lint attaches to the hose instead of your laundry.
