    Metatron

    • Metatron is mentioned primarily in the Talmud and is a prominent angel and Seraph who is never actually mentioned in the New or Old Testament. Some texts claim that Metatron was created along with the Earth, while others claim that he was first a human named Enoch who ascended to Heaven. As a Seraph, Metatron is one of God's attendants and can look at upon His countenance. Metatron's primary duty is as a scribe and advocate. Metatron is immensely powerful and is identified in the Talmud as being second only to God.

    Uriel

    • Uriel appears in the Apocrypha, a collection of Biblical texts that are not considered canon, and in John Milton's "Paradise Lost," where he is identified as the Regent of the Sun. He has been identified as both an angel of light and, in the Jewish tradition, the angel of thunder and earthquakes. Uriel wields a fiery sword and was identified as the angel that drove Adam and Eve from Eden. Uriel is often associated with terror and prophecy.

    Jehoel

    • Jehoel, sometimes written Yahoel, is identified in the Apocolypse of Abraham, an ancient manuscript that is not officially accepted by most branches of Christianity or Judaism, as the chief of the Seraphim. One of the duties of all Seraphim is to sing songs praising God, and Jehoel instructs the other Seraphim in their singing. Jehoel has also been identfied as the angel of presence and the angel of fire.

    Disputed Seraphim

    • Because the Seraphim are only mentioned briefly in the Bible, and many are not identified by rank, several people have argued about the ranks of various angels. Furthermore, many non-mainstream religious texts have dealt with angels and have sometimes contradicted each other. For example, Lucifer, the angel who rebelled against God and was cast down to Hell, has sometimes been identified as a Seraph, however, others, like St. Thomas of Aquinas, in the Summa Theologica identified him as a Cherubim, a lower order of angel.
