Telefnica announced today, the eleventh edition of the report 'The Information Society in Spain' for 2010, with the presence of the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Miguel Sebastian, who chaired the event, as well as Cesar Alierta, president of Telefonica and Javier Nadal, vice president of Fundacin Telefnica.
The report begins a new format, by changing and adding new indicators and analysis. In this new version, the study first contains a summary of indicators and in the other hand, a set of specific case studies that analyze in depth each key trend. It has also reduced its size, by summerizing the main indicators, data and changes that allow a description of the current situation of the sector.
During 2010, one of the assets that define the evolution and consolidation of the Information Society in Spain, is that the more mature segments of the population have taken over from the growth in digitization and activities using the Internet, with rates of growth well above the average during the last two years. According to the data collected by Telefonica, during the last two years, the level of digitization has grown among those belonging to the mature segments (between 45 and 64 years-old), more than the average growth in population. For example, talking about the use of Internet in relation with banking, while the average does not change, it grew 4% among users between 45 and 54.
This new approach of more mature people using ICT, demonstrates that the process of digitalization of society is entering a more mature stage in which citizens are increasingly aware of the usefulness of these services in their daily activities, so the age gap tends to reduce. This fact is of great importance for the greater weight of the mature sector in the population pyramid, and because it is a segment with greater purchasing power than the average, which may convert this group in the engine of the growth of the Information Society in the next decade.
The increase in use by more mature people as well as the high participation of young people has led the Internet community in Spain to reach nearly 27 million users. Of that total, 69.2% access the web daily, a 13.3% increase from last year, indicating that nearly 15 million people make an intensive, daily use of the Internet.
Concerning the evolution of access to technologies, the demand for broadband in Spain continues to grow. During 2010 it have been surpassed the 10 million of fixed broadband lines, having experienced a growth of 8.3% over the last year. Of those ten million accesses, 80% are supported by ADSL technology, followed by cable with a 19%.
In Spain, moreover, there are nine million households with Internet access, representing an increase of more than 700,000 households last year. Of these, more than eight million eight hundred thousand homes have broadband connections, representing a growth of more than 900,000 accesses from 2009.
