Polyarteritis Nodosa - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment
Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare auto-immune disease which involves spontaneous inflammation of the arteries.
It is seen more in middle aged people.
Because arteries are involved, the disease can affect any organ of the body including the muscles, joints, intestines, nerves, kidneys and skin.
Common symptoms include pain, fatigue, weight loss, fever, bleeding, and poor functioning of organs.
The Ayurvedic treatment of PAN is aimed at reducing the inflammation of the arteries, restoring immune dysfunction and preventing complications.
Medicines used to reduce the inflammation of the arteries are: Arogya-Vardhini, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Tapyadi-Loh, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Laxadi-Guggulu, Chandrakala-Ras, Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daru-Haridra (Berberis aristata), Khadeer (Acacia catechu), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris).
Medicines which act on the 'Rakta' dhatu (tissue) are useful in this condition, such as Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) and Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa).
To improve the immune status of the body, medicines used are: Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Sutshekhar-Ras, Abhrak-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma, Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Amalaki, Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) and Bhrungraj.
In order to prevent intestinal gangrene and bleeding, medicines like Kamdudha, Praval-Panchamrut, Sutshekhar-Ras, Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka) and Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea) are used.
