How to Create a Random Word That Sounds Reasonable
- 1). Combine two existing words. Choose two words that already exist and combine them to form one word that means something similar to both of the root words. If the word you create is based on words people are already familiar with, the word will sound more reasonable and be accepted faster.
- 2). Borrow from a foreign language. Certain languages are common enough in the US that their sounds are familiar even to people that don't necessarily speak the foreign language fluently. Borrow some sounds or parts of words in French or Spanish to create your own word. It will give your word more credibility if it's based on a pre-existing word and you'll sound even smarter.
- 3). Bring back some slang. Pick a slang word that was popular a decade or two ago and give it a new twist. Add a syllable or change the pronunciation of a slang term and start using it again. Making a variation on an old slang term will make the word you create relatively well-known; giving it a slight variation will make it new and unique.
- 4). Read the dictionary. In order for your word to be new but still reasonable, it needs to have a logical definition. Use the dictionary to help you narrow down a definition for your word, then create the word based on that. A thesaurus can help make sure your new random word doesn't sound like any existing words that mean the same thing.
- 5). Use your word often. Words sound more familiar and reasonable the more often they're heard, so use your new random word in casual conversation with many different people. You might get a few questions about it's meaning at first, but it will become more readily accepted the more people hear it.
