    • 1). Spread a towel on the floor beneath the toilet tank to catch any water spillage as you tighten the bolts. Turn the toilet's shut-off valve all the way clockwise to prevent any additional water entry into the tank. Remove the tank lid and carefully set it out of the way.

    • 2). Flush the toilet, holding the handle down until you notice that as much water as possible has drained from the tank. Soak up the leftover water in the tank bottom, using a towel.

    • 3). Place a screwdriver into the head of the bolt to hold the bolt steady as you tighten the corresponding nut underneath, using your hand. Place the screwdriver on the other tank-to-bowl bolt and tighten the nut underneath, alternating between the bolts until they are snug. Tighten the nuts additionally, using an adjustable wrench, but be certain not to over-tighten the nuts, which could crack the tank or bowl.

    • 4). Turn the shut-off valve counterclockwise to allow water to enter the tank. Check underneath the tank to make sure there are no leaks around the bolts. Flush the toilet and look for any leaks beneath the tank. Place the lid on the tank.
