Making Hard Resin Base Plastic Aquarium Plants

    Why Add a Resin Base?

    • Premade plastic aquarium plants usually come with a tiny plastic base to seat in the sand or gravel media. If you have fish or other creatures that dig, you will often find this base is inadequate for keeping the plant in place. A heavier, wider base is needed to prevent dig-up.

    Choosing Non-Toxic Materials

    • At any pet store that sells aquarium fish---or online---you can find plastic models of aquatic plants for your tank in a variety of styles. All plastic plants designed for aquaria are of nontoxic materials. If you choose a plastic model plant not designed for aquarium use, be certain the material used and any coatings on it are nontoxic when mixed with water. Choose resin for your base that is nontoxic and water-safe as well. Alumilite and Aqua-Resin brands are water-soluble and nontoxic.

    Forming the Resin-Based Plants

    • Make a mold for your resin base. You will need to peel the mold away from the finished product, so flexible or disposable materials are recommended. Resin will bond with porous materials such as cloth, cardboard or wood. Use silicone or plastic or cover the mold with nonporous plastic wrap. Create a wide plate-shape by using a plate or bowl. Or, if preferred, create a long, narrow mold to hold several plants at once for the length of the tank. You can use aquarium gravel or sand to hold the plant upright and to add weight to the finished product. Mix the resin according to package directions. Pour the resin into the mold as directed. Verify the plant is oriented the way you desire before hardening begins. Allow the resin to harden according to package directions before demolding.

Seat the New Plant in Your Tank

    • Bury the new, larger base in the sand or gravel bottom media in your tank. Add water and creatures, and enjoy aquarium plants that will now stay where you put them.
