How to Cut Standing Deadwood for Firewood
- 1). Find a branch within reach and break off a small piece of the branch. If the stick makes a cracking sound, then it is ready to burn.
- 2). Cut all dead branches within reach with a bow saw or folding camp saw. Backpackers and campers who wish to save space can use a lightweight folding saw that is designed to cut through branches. Use this saw to make a clean, square cut as close to the main trunk as possible. When cutting large branches, begin with an undercut at the bottom of the branch that is at least several inches deep. Once you've made this cut, proceed with the top cut. If a helper is available, have him hold the branch so it falls away from the tree.
- 3). Place all cut branches in a neat pile away from the tree.
- 4). Begin cutting the branches into foot-long sections with a bow saw. If working at home, use a pair of sawbucks to hold the branches while you cut. Otherwise just place a short piece of saw wood underneath the fallen branch within a few inches of where you want to cut.
- 5). Cut all pieces into foot-long sections and make a neat pile with the cut pieces.
- 6). Transport the cut pieces of wood to your campsite or home with a tote bag.
- 1). Pull out a length of rope that is at least 25 feet and tie one end around a small rock. The knot should be tight enough to the rock so that it will not slip.
- 2). Toss the rock with the rope attached over top of a dead branch. Hold the loose end of the rope in your other hand while you do this.
- 3). Adjust the position of the rock until you can hold both lengths of rope in one hand.
- 4). Slide the bend in the rope along the top of the until it is one or two feet away from the main trunk.
- 5). Step away from the tree so that you are not standing directly underneath the branch with the rope looped over top.
- 6). Pull the rope toward you with several quick jerks.
- 7). Pick up the wood from the ground and place it in the cutting area.
