Oxygen Cylinder Safety
- The presence of oxygen increases the flammability of items located near the oxygen cylinder.
- Oxygen carts are used for storing the heavy cylinders to prevent the tanks from falling over and causing injury.

"No Smoking" signs should be hung on the front door of homes where oxygen is in use. Signs can also alert firefighters to the fact that oxygen equipment is being used in the home. - Oxygen cylinders can easily be mistaken for CO2 canisters. Both cylinders are greenish-gray in color and can be administered through the use of a universal adaptor, according to the VA National Center for Patient Safety.
- Oil-based products may easily ignite when coming in contact with oxygen, according to Wright & Filippis, a home medical equipment supplier. They recommend against the use of oil-based lotions or hair products in conjunction with oxygen use.
- Oxygen cylinders can be inadvertently turned into missiles if they are drawn into the magnet of an MRI machine. Cylinders may also become projectiles if they are punctured and any of the gas is allowed to escape.
