How to Plan a Long Road Trip With Toddlers & Pets
- 1). Plan your route in advance using a GPS or online map service. Research areas of interest along the way and places where you can stop to eat, play outside, walk the dog or go to the bathroom. Estimate it will take almost twice as long as your mapping program tells you, since toddlers and pets need to stop about once every hour or two.
- 2). Prepare a safety kit including flares, a spare tire, tools, a flashlight, bandages, aspirin and other necessities. Check your tires' air pressure, get an oil change (if needed) and perform any basic vehicle maintenance before leaving to ensure your family has a safe trip.
- 3). Get your child and pet ready for the road trip by taking a few shorter trips in advance. If you're driving six hours away on your road trip, you might want to grab the dog and your toddler and visit a park or beach an hour and a half away to get them used to being in the car for an extended period of time.
- 4). Pack a cooler with plenty of water, juice and snacks. Bring dry dog or cat food and treats and your child's favorite dry snacks like cereal or fruit snacks for the car. Pack sippy cups, pet water and food bowls, bibs, napkins, utensils, paper plates and plastic food containers as well.
- 5). Bring your toddler's favorite blanket, pillow, stuffed animal and a couple of extra toys and books. A portable DVD player and kid-friendly movies will keep your child entertained on the road if you don't have an in-vehicle entertainment system. Don't forget cat or dog toys and leashes, too.
- 6). Purchase a pet restraint or carrier and test it out in advance of your trip. Make sure your pet is comfortable and can't escape from the carrier. Double check your toddler's car seat before leaving for your road trip and ensure that it is installed properly.
- 7). Pack one outfit for each day of your trip for each family member, plus extra clothing in case of accidents. Old bath or beach towels come in handy when cleaning up pet or toddler spills, along with a couple of rolls of paper towels or wet wipes. Stash toiletries and diapers in a tote bag or baby bag.
