Application Process

• The first step in the application process for applying for a grant from organizations serving the developmentally disabled is to complete online research to identify a list of foundations that fund these types of programs.
  
  

Foundations

• There are many national foundations that fund programs serving people who are developmentally disabled.
  
  The Arc of the United States awards grant funding to organizations that further their mission, which is to ensure equal access to those who are developmentally disabled.
  
  Civitan International provides scholarship funds for individuals who have developmental disabilities. Its goal is to improve the quality of life of the individuals and their families.
  
  The Order of the Alhambra Charity Fund, Inc. provides grants to programs providing education, housing and services to people with developmental disabilities.
  
  The Daniels Fund awards grants to organizations serving developmentally disabled adults and children. Its goal is to help the individual become as independent as possible. It funds projects focusing on intervention, respite care, equipment purchase and resources for the family.
  
  The Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation funds organizations that serve people with developmentally disabled individuals. Their focus is on the social and emotional problems of the individual and family.
  
  

Letter of Inquiry

• The letter of inquiry is typically the first contact with the foundation. It is an overview that includes a paragraph on the history of the organization, program information and a formal request.
  
  

Full Proposal

• When a foundation responds with a favorable response they will request a full proposal. A full proposal is a complete look at the organization. It is usually multiple pages and includes an organization history, full description of the program, goals and a budget.
  
  

Final Steps

• After you submit a proposal, the foundation will respond with a negative or positive response. A positive response will include a contract that you will have to sign in order to get the grant funds.
