Reverse Osmosis Water Units Remove All - Or Only Some - Water Contaminants?

Reverse osmosis water units are one choice for homeowners.
Public facilities use reverse osmosis systems, so it is not a necessary investment for families serviced by public utilities.
There are other less expensive systems that actually do more to protect your safety.
Only families that live in rural areas with a very dirty source need reverse osmosis water units.
You see, reverse osmosis systems remove visible pollutants and some invisible ones, but the ones that are heavily advertised are not effective for that purpose.
Companies like GE are marketing their reverse osmosis water units for people who want protection from drugs, chlorine and other chemicals that are present in tap water.
There are better, less wasteful, more economical and environmentally friendly choices.
Reverse osmosis systems are only one step in a complete purification process.
If your waters have not been disinfected, you still need a disinfection phase.
People serviced by a treatment facility do not need this step and reverse osmosis water units will not perform it.
Today there is a UV filtration device for homeowners that need to remove microbes.
For example if you have a well that is contaminated with acanthamoeba, you might want to consider a UV filter.
It is safer than chlorine and doesn't affect the taste.
UV disinfection may not remove parasitic cysts.
For that type of contamination, you need reverse osmosis systems or another device that performs sub-micron filtration.
Sub micron filters are typically less expensive than reverse osmosis water units.
If you are serviced by a public facility, you need to remove chlorination byproducts known as THMS or trihalomethanes.
Recently, research has been published confirming that they do in fact cause cancer.
But, apparently scientists have known for years.
Respected publications were afraid at first to publish the results, because of how important chlorination is to the health and well-being of the general public.
Without it, there would be outbreaks of waterborne illnesses, unless of course the individual chose to take steps in his own home.
But, now the research has been published and interestingly governments that provide public health care are looking at the costs involved in treating these new cancer cases.
In Canada, researchers estimate that over 700 new cases of bladder and colorectal cancer every year were directly caused by THM exposure.
The risk for those who swim in chlorinated pools is considered "unacceptable".
Reverse osmosis systems will not remove THMS.
They can only be removed through a process called "adsorption".
Some of the best home systems include that step.
In order to protect yourself, you not only need a kitchen filtration device, but also one for your showerheads and possibly other areas of your home.
THMs are gases that become airborne when water is boiled or heated, as in the shower.
There are no reverse osmosis water units on the market that protect against THMs.
Believe me, I've done the research, but other technologies will.
