If you were a dog owner in 2007, you may remember the dog food recall of 2007 and its monumental effect on thousands of dog owners.
Without knowing, the dog kibble they were feeding their pets was laced with melamine, a chemical used in making plastics, glue and fertilizer.
This in turn resulted in various health issues and untold amounts of money to veterinarians to save their beloved pets from kidney failure and other related injuries.
Many dogs lives were lost and families affected by the greed and lack of concern from the company and its owners.
Pet food manufacturers recalled about 150 brands of wet dog and cat food from all over the country.
On June 16th, 2009 the company owners, pleaded guilty to selling contaminated and mis-branded food.
Although the initial indictment was for multiple counts, the sentence could lead to federal prison time and/or heavy fines.
In another instance in November 2008, a recall was issued due to salmonella contamination that affected brands from many well known products.
Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and become dehydrated with extensive diarrhea.
Other symptoms include fever and vomiting with some animals only having loss of appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
Animals with salmonella can carry the infection and have no visible symptoms and potentially infect other animals or even humans.
It is safe to say that many people take a bag of dog kibble for granted.
Due to minimal regulatory oversight, more incidents of contamination and abuses could be on the horizon.
The Environmental Working Group tested ten major brands of dog food and found significant traces of bone meal and other by-products in the formulation.
Ingredients can contain "meat by-products, excessive amounts of grain and who knows what.
If you check the list of ingredients of your favorite dog food, you may be surprised by the amount of fillers and by-products it contains.
It is easy to see why all pet food is not alike and just how your harmful your dog kibble can be.
Owners who care about the welfare of their pets should pay close attention to the ingredients they are getting in their favorite dog kibble.
If bone meal is a major ingredient, you may be causing your best friend a future destined with health issues and even death by saving a few pennies on cheaper dog food.
One option is to make your own homemade dog food to combat the problem altogether.
It may be a bit more expensive and time consuming, but isn't your best friend worth it?
