5 -Way

• The first shot a puppy should get is a 5-way vaccine. This vaccine prevents five different diseases: parvovirus, distemper, parainfluenza, hepatitis and corona. This vaccine should be given at 6 weeks of age and again at 9, 12 and 15 weeks. It is important to stay on schedule or you may need to start over. Also, it is important to remember that it takes at least two doses before the puppy begins to build immunity to the disease. This vaccine will need to be repeated yearly.
  
  

Bordetella

• A bordetella vaccine should be given at 12 weeks of age. The bordetella vaccine is to prevent "kennel cough." This is a highly contagious disease that dogs and puppies can catch that will cause them to cough or hack harshly. If you plan on having your dog around other dogs, you will want this vaccine. If you plan to board the dog at a kennel, this vaccine is required. It will need to be repeated yearly.
  
  

Rabies

• A rabies vaccination is required by law in most areas. The rabies vaccine should be given at 6 months of age and repeated one year after that. Subsequent rabies vaccinations can be given every three years after. Be certain you receive a rabies tag and certification when your puppy receives a rabies shot.
  
  

Heartworm Prevention

• Heartworm is another awful ailment to protect your puppy from. There are many ways to immunize against heartworm, the most common being a chewable pill given monthly. This should be started at some time before the puppy reaches 6 months old. Your vet will advise at what exact age it should be started. This may depend on your area, the dog's breed, if the puppy stays outdoors or if the puppy is in a home with several other animals.
  
  

Cost

• Many people fail to obtain all the necessary vaccinations for their pet because of costs. However, this is something that should be considered before bringing a new puppy home. If cost is of concern to you, call your local animal welfare society such as the Humane Society or Animal Protective League and inquire about low-cost vaccine clinics.
