How to Tag Birds

    • 1). Set up eight to 12, 12-meter mist nets in a location where the licensed bird bander thinks you will be likely to capture large birds. Erect these nets so they are supported by and stretched between upright roles. Each net will have pockets, called "shelves," that trap birds that fly into them.

    • 2). Walk the loop of nets, working in pairs. Inspect each net for trapped birds. Remove netted birds, holding them by their body. Place each bird in a soft, cloth bird bag.

    • 3). Remove and bag all birds caught in a net at once. Never leave birds in nets. Carry bagged birds to a central location for tagging.

    • 4). Glue transmitters to the tail feathers of raptors (birds of prey). Wear protective clothing including leather gauntlets and face masks when tagging raptors.

    • 5). Attach transmitters to geese and ducks using a neck collar made for geese and ducks. Attach transmitters to some other birds using harnesses or glue and following the instructions of the licensed bird bander.

    • 6). Estimate the bird's fat content and feather molt under the direct supervision of a licensed bander. Experienced banders estimate a bird's body fat by blowing through the feathers on their throat with a straw to see the color underneath. The more yellow the color the higher the bird's body fat. Measure wing length with a wing ruler. Record all data in writing.

    • 7). Test radio and satellite transmitters and receivers before releasing tagged birds. Set tagged birds free as quickly as possible.
