Removing a Faucet Mounting Bolt
- 1). Turn off the two water cut-off valves under the sink. There is one valve on each water line connecting the house supply pipe to the supply line going to the faucet. To shut off the water, turn the valve handles counterclockwise with your hands.
- 2). Disconnect the water supply lines from the faucet with a wrench. The supply lines have a nut on the end similar to the nut on a garden hose. Turn the nut counterclockwise with the wrench. Put on your eye goggles at this time before attempting to remove the retaining nuts to the faucet.
- 3). Loosen the nut securing the faucet to the sink with a faucet wrench. A faucet wrench has an adjustable jaw head that pivots. The nuts attach to the same threaded “bolt” as the water lines connected to the faucet.
- 4). Drill the nut off if the nut is rusty or has built-up sediment and will not budge with a faucet wrench. Insert a 1/8-inch drill bit into your drill. Drill two holes opposite each other on the face of the nut. The face of the nut is what you see as you look up at the nut.
- 5). Remove the 1/8-inch drill bit from the drill and insert a 1/4-inch drill bit. Drill holes with the 1/4-inch drill bit in the previous holes in the nut. This will break the nut to remove it from the faucet bolt. If necessary, use a larger bit to break the nut.
- 6). Go to the top of the sink and pull the faucet off the sink top. Clean the area on the sink top with a cloth to prepare the surface for a new faucet.
