As a cleaning service business owner you are focused on two things: how to get new cleaning accounts and how to improve your cleaning business.
If there is an issue with poor work, that needs to be addressed right away.
Otherwise it may sabotage all the great work you are doing in the areas of marketing,recruiting and hiring, understanding your financials, etc.
Poor quality work could be the result of several things; here are the top 3 and how to correct them: #1.
Unclear Expectations
The most common problem is that your cleaner isn't sure what the expectations are.
This is where a checklist and one-on-one training come in handy.
Use this simple 3 step process for training all of your cleaners as they come on-board with your company:
  • Step One: Give a verbal description (on site) of how to perform the task in the correct fashion.
    Point out things they should watch for and tips to keep in mind when completing this task.
  • Step Two: Have them watch as you (or a supervisor) demonstrate the correct way to perform a task such as cleaning a urinal, emptying trash, or mopping a floor.
  • Step Three: Let the employee demonstrate what you've just described and shown, by having them clean the same object or perform the task.
    Make any corrections and give additional instructions as needed.
This training process is known as the "hear, see, do" process.
It uses several different communication methods while engaging not just the brain, but also the senses to teach.
It works so well because each individual has a different learning style; some learn by seeing, some learn by doing.
This method incorporates them all.

Not Enough Time
Another common cause of poor quality work product is time.
Are you sure you've correctly assessed how long the job (s) should take? If your cleaning staff has to rush through to get the job done, it may be because there hasn't been enough time allocated to do it properly.
Re-visit the time frames you established, and make sure they're adequate.
Also, double check the way the work is being performed.
There may be inefficiencies that could be corrected with a quick re-training on the proper method of performing the tasks.
Taking this one small step this will enable you to improve your cleaning business's performance in a big way.
#3 An Attitude Problem The final reason for poor quality work may be an attitude issue.
Either your janitor is upset about something (in or out of the workplace) that is causing this problem, or they don't take pride in doing a good job.
  • If you've established and maintained good lines of communication with your cleaners, you should be able to ask in a gentle way if there's a problem.
    It's perfectly acceptable to let them know, the work product is inadequate and you're hoping to be able to help them correct the problems.
    Some people will only respond to a direct question like "Is there something here at work that's upsetting you?"
  • If you've established that there's nothing bothering them about their work schedule, pay, supplies, conditions, etc.
    and you still don't see the quality of work product you need it's time for a serious talk.
    Let your cleaner know that you'd like to salvage the working relationship, but that the work product isn't acceptable.

Let your cleaner know that their poor performance is risking the account and that it must change.
Ask them what they need to turn this around.
Get a commitment from them to improve, with a specific date by which to accomplish this.
If they don't keep their word you'll have to use progressive discipline and perhaps terminate their employment.
Before you do that, ask them if they need to take a break from work.
Sometimes people are just really tired and may need a day, or even a week of rest.
It's better for them to handle it as a leave of absence than to be fired and ineligible for re-hire.
Sometimes knowing they have this option will encourage an employee to ask for what they need, and your offer can make them feel valued if handled properly.
As a successful company owner, you are always on the lookout for ways to improve your cleaning business.
Your employee's performance is a crucial aspect of this process.
