How to Pack for a Hike
- 1). Consider the weather. It is more optimal to hike during the summer because during this season you are able to pack lightly. One jacket may be all you need at night, as opposed to packing gloves, fleece-lined clothing, scarves and other things you may need during the winter. When hiking in the summer, don't forget to bring a hat and sunglasses to shield yourself against the sun.
- 2). Pack water and food. Whether hiking for 1 day or 3, always bring enough water to keep you hydrated through your hike. When packing food, place it in a zippered bag or a similar container that is well-sealed. There may be wild animals out there on the trail and you don't want them following the smell of the food in your backpack. Pack food that is easy to eat, such as sandwiches and trail mix.
- 3). Pack emergency and personal care items. First aid kits help minimize infections from cuts and wounds, which can save lives. Lip balm, sunscreen, insect repellent and tissues are important things to bring to protect yourself from environmental forces like the sun and wind. Insect repellent helps to make the hike more comfortable. Also, don't forget to bring necessary medications for certain medical conditions like allergies.
- 4). Pack the proper clothing. Hiking boots, extra shirts and socks are the rule of thumb. It is also good to keep in mind that layering clothes is the best way to go since you'll easily be able to make changes to your clothing according to the weather.
- 5). Pack the proper gear, such as a sleeping bag, camera, flashlight, knife, compass, binoculars and maps. These things are essential tools you need when you are out in the wilderness. Be sure to pack batteries for your flashlight.
- 6). Don't forget a towel. Hiking, whether done in the summer or winter, is a physically demanding activity which will induce sweating. A fresh, clean towel can be your salvation when sweat is a hassle.
