How to Rent a Trailer for a Car
- 1). Determine what type of hitch you'll need depending on the weight of the trailer and the size of your car by looking at Uhaul's online Select-A-Hitch Guide. You will either need a regular-duty hitch, either a Fixed Tongue or Receiver-Style Sportframe, or a heavy-duty hitch called a Frame Hitch. You can also make an appointment for a free towing inspection at your local Uhaul if you need help determining what your car needs.
- 2). Make an installation appointment for a hitch, if your car doesn't already have one, at your local Uhaul. You can schedule an installation online or by phone.
- 3). Reserve a trailer online or by calling Uhaul, using a credit card or debit card. You may need to leave a deposit down for part of the rental costs.
- 4). Get insurance or damage coverage on the trailer you're renting, as most insurances and credit cards don't cover damages to a rented trailer. Uhaul's plans also cover the property that is being towed by the trailer, up to a certain dollar amount.
- 5). Arrive at Uhaul to pick up your trailer, double-checking that your trailer is properly hooked up before driving away with it.
- 6). Return the trailer when you are done using it. You will have a set day and time to return the trailer to avoid additional charges. Depending on your needs and the agreements made with the rental agency, you may return it to a different location or you will return it to the same one.
