Cheap Spa Holidays
- Most spas reduce their rates off-season and offer special deals during times when demand shrinks. For example, each spring and fall, many spas participate in spa week, when prices are slashed and treatments that normally cost over $100 are only $50. As of 2011, 27 cities nationwide participate in spa week. If you can't take advantage of spa week, look into deals like Dr. Wilkinson's Hot Springs Resort in Calistoga, Calif., which offers overnight lodging, a complimentary mud bath, aromatherapy whirlpool mineral bath, mineral steam, blanket wrap and the use of three mineral pools for $79.95 a person during winter months until February.
- Snub those famous, high-profile spas with their high prices for smaller spas in less traveled places. For example, Ojo Caliente spa about an hour from both Taos, and Santa Fe, NM, has a $400 seasonal deal in the summer for two adults, which includes an overnight stay, two 50-minute massages, a private mineral pool with kiva fireplace and two yoga classes. The Cliff House Resort and Spa in Maine offers a midweek package Sunday through Thursday with two nights of lodging, breakfast and dinner and a $50 gift certificate toward spa services for $321 per person. Prices applicable as of 2011.
- Most spas have a selection of deals, packages and seasonal specials. You can look at spa websites in the area you want to holiday, or use a general website such as Spavelous, which lists spa deals by state. For example, the Friends Getaway Spa from Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa Valley offers accommodations in a suite with fireplace, kitchen, 50-minute spa treatment and 20 percent off other spa treatments, and a wine tasting, for $199 per person.
- Though you can often find the best deals by purchasing packages, you may not want some of the treatments that come with the package. Maybe you just want to stay at a resort, use the mineral springs and have a massage. When booking a spa holiday, calculate whether you could save more money buying treatments a la carte. After all, you'll still be at a spa which has relaxing amenities that come with the price of the lodging.
