    History

    • To determine if there is herniation of a disc, a complete physical examination is required. It is necessary to determine if symptoms are of sudden onset, such as with an accident, or if symptoms have been progressing over a longer time frame.

    Causes

    • C2 herniated disc symptoms may appear when the soft gel-like center squeezes out through the outer lining of the disc causing pressure on the nerve endings.

    Symptoms

    • One of the first symptoms may be pain in your neck, along with arm pain. This can be a shooting pain down one arm, or a stiff neck. Pain in the lower back is also common.

    Other Symptoms

    • According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a significant symptom that may be present with a C2 herniated disc is a headache in the back of the head. Other symptoms may include burning pain in the upper body, neck or arms.

    Intervention

    • According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, weakness in your arms or hands may be a sign of C2 herniation. Your health care provider may refer you to a neurologist for symptoms such as extremity weakness, loss of coordination or neck pain that does not respond to over-the-counter medication.
