Anglesey is a large beautiful island located off the North Wales coast close to Snowdonia.
The island is a popular tourist destination attracting visitors for its countryside walks and beautiful beaches.
There are many great attractions on Anglesey to keep visitors entertained from historic castles to country parks.
Anglesey is separated from the mainland by the Menai Straits and is crossed by two bridges.
Today the majority of traffic uses the Britannia Bridge on the A55 dual carriageway however if you take a short drive to the north you'll find the small town of Menai Bridge.
Named after the first ever permanent crossing to the island Menai Bridge is an architectural wonder that was built by Thomas Telford in 1824.
It's well worth stopping and taking a walk to the bridge where you can walk across it and admire the views or go down to sea level and marvel at the arches.
One of Anglesey's biggest attractions is Beaumaris Castle located on the east coast of the island approximately 15 minutes drive north of Menai Bridge.
The castle was built on the orders of King Edward I of England during his war with the Welsh and formed part of his iron ring designed to subdue the uprisings from Snowdonia.
Although Beaumaris Castle was never finished it remains one of the finest examples of a concentric castle in the world and is well worth a visit.
Today the castle is looked after by CADW, the Welsh organisation for the protection of historic buildings.
Continuing around the coastline to the north you can visit Red Wharf Bay which is a large sandy bay and one of Anglesey's best beaches.
When the tode goes out the large bay is a great place to explore and just relax and chill out.
Over towards the west of the island you can visit Wylfa Power Station.
This nuclear power station has a free visitor centre which is worth a visit.
Discover how nuclear power is created and the role it has in the future of power generation in the United Kingdom.
On the west coast of Anglesey is the port of Holyhead, one of the major ports carrying traffic between the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Here you can find two country parks to explore and the stunning South Stack lighthouse which is accessed via a suspended walkway over the crashing waves below.
The Penrhos Coastal Park is located on the east side of Holyhead and allows visitors to explore some of the coastal life that exists on Anglesey's beaches.
The second park is the Breakwater Country Park which was created when the breakwater for the port was built.
From here you can walk over to South Stack on Holyhead Mountain.
Travelling now along the south coast of Anglesey take a visit to the village of Rhosneigr which has two glorious beaches and is a very popular watersports venue.
For something a little less busy continue along the coast for a few minutes and find the glorious beach at Aberfraw which is usually quiet and has miles of sand to explore.
Finally heading back towards Anglesey's east coast spend some time at the Anglesey Sea Zoo.
The zoo specialises in cold water tanks with creatures found on the shores of Anglesey and the Menai Straits.
It is Wales largest marine aquarium and has such delights as the Bone Free Zone and Shark Pool.
Just up the coast from the Sea Zoo is Plas Mawr a country mansion that is now owned and operated by the National Trust.
Explore the beautiful grounds with views over the Menai Straits and towards Snowdonia and take a tour around the historic house full of antiques and treasures.
Finally visit the town with the longest name in Britain.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is often shortened to LlanfairPG by the locals and means in the full version "The church of St.
Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St.
Tysilio's of the red cave".
Exploring the town you'll find the Marquess of Anglesey column which visitors can walk up to and also the James Pringle shopping arcade.
