    • 1). Measure ingredients by volume, in the way you normally do, but with metric spoons and cups. A metric "cup" of 250 mL is slightly larger than an American cup, and a liter is slightly larger than a quart. A teaspoon is approximately 5 mL, and a tablespoon is approximately 15 mL.

    • 2). Weigh ingredients on a kitchen scale using the metric setting. Don't worry about conversion unless your scale does not support metric units, in which case you will need to do the math. An ounce is approximately 28 g, and a kilogram is approximately 2.27 pounds.

    • 3). Increase or decrease recipes simply by using the metric measurements. Unlike ounces to cups or ounces to pounds, the metric system is based on simple math without any equivalents to memorize. Four metric "cups" at 25 mL each equals 1000 mL, or 1 liter. One liter of water, or 1000 mL, weighs 1 kilogram, or 1000 grams.
