    • 1). Gently lay your dog on its back. Lightly place a hand on its chest. This holds the dog in place while exposing its belly.

    • 2). Brush the belly of the dog with a pin brush. This type of brush is designed to gently untangle fur. A pin brush also removes loose hair, which reduces shedding. Brush under the arms, on the belly and around all four feet. Brush the fur in the direction that it grows.

    • 3). Run your hand over the belly while gently pulling at the fur. This removes any excess loose fur not removed by the pin-toothed brush.

    • 4). Comb your dog’s belly with a fine-toothed comb. Combing your dog brings dirt and fleas to the surface. Carefully run the comb through the fur. Do not pull the comb or tug on the fur as you comb. Too much tugging on the fur can hurt the dog.

    • 5). Clip the belly fur, underarm fur, foot and leg hair shorter using blunt nosed scissors. Cut off a little fur at a time until you reach the desired length.
