How to Make a Hat Cake
- 1). Prepare, bake and thoroughly cool two 9-inch round cakes following the recipe of your preference.
- 2). Prepare frosting. Choose colors that reflect the theme of your event. For example, certain women's groups hold "red hat" events and red frosting would be an ideal choice in that scenario. The color of the frosting is not as significant as the decorations. The embellishment is what distinguishes the cake as a hat.
- 3). Create a paper template six inches in diameter. Use a smaller cake pan or other kitchen tool to serve as the template when drawing the circle. Cut the circle out of the paper.
- 4). Place the paper circle on top of one of the cakes, holding it in place with a finger or a toothpick poked through the paper and cake. Cut around the template. Discard the outer ring of cake. You should now have a 9-inch cake and a 6-inch cake.
- 5). Place the 9-inch cake on a platter or cake stand. Frost it on the sides and top with an offset spatula or piping bag.
- 6). Place the 6-inch cake, centered, on top of the 9-inch cake. Trim around the top edge of the tier to round its appearance for a more realistic hat-like aesthetic. Run the knife at an angle around the edge. Frost the second layer.
- 7). Embellish the cake using fondant decorations, edible glitter or more piped decorations, as desired. Create a ribbon around the base of the second layer or place an actual ribbon there, to be removed before eating.
