? Here are some tips for college search, application and other strategies to sweep the college admissions directors off their feet! Six years back, when I was applying to colleges, I was not getting in.
So I decided to take a gap year and then within the next few months, I started getting offers from Stanford, Yale and other IVY leagues to join them.
From zero responses, I got acceptance letters from twelve out of the fourteen colleges I applied for.
That's an 85 percent success rate.
Yet, I chose Stanford.
No matter which school you are in, you will be applying to colleges.
Some of us took help from counsellors, and some of us just got in.
How do you get into a great college? First of all, think about all the colleges you want to go to.
Do you want to go to a public school or a private school? Do you want to go on the West Coast of America or the East Coast? Do you want to go to an IVY league or not? It's funny that The Princeton Review's "The Best 351 Colleges" is a great place to start when looking for colleges.
Do your research before you speak to anyone.
Once you have done your research on which colleges to go to, the next step is Extra-Curricular activities.
Pick up the tennis racket and play tennis.
Join a club.
Instead of sitting in front of the television watching shows the whole day, play the guitar.
Colleges, especially IVY leagues want well rounded students.
Who wants a geek who scores 90% in all classes but does not know how to play a musical instrument or a sport and thus can't contribute to the college team? Once you've selected which colleges to apply for and joined extra-curricular activities, how do you get into your dream college? If you just fill out the application form without building yourself, no college will take you.
I got a 1390 on my SAT score and didn't get any interview call and still got into Stanford.
You need to also have great test scores, great letters of recommendation, amazing personal essays and show leadership capabilities.
