How to Tell If a Water Meter Is Malfunctioning?
- 1). Determine a possible water leak by noting the numbers on the water meter. Abstain from using any water in the house for one hour and reread the meter. If the numbers increase, look for a leak in the plumbing. Inspect pipes for leaks both inside and outside the home. Look for wet spots on walls and ceilings or small puddles of water on the floor. Check all faucets for drips and make sure they are all in the off position. Even a small drip in a water faucet increases water usage significantly. Check all toilets to ensure they are not running and using excess water. A problem with a float inside of a toilet can cause water to drain slightly and refill, triggering an increase in water consumption.
- 2). See if you have an air eliminator valve installed before the water meter. Ensure the air eliminator valve is in good working order and free of rust by opening the valve and feeling for air pressure. A water meter will count airflow as well as water flow through a meter as part of usage. If excess air flows through the water meter, it will cause an increase in consumption, raising the bill.
- 3). Call the utility company after ruling out plumbing issues. Water meter accuracy is its responsibility. A utility company will send a representative to remove the meter, test it at a facility by running a premeasured amount of water through the meter, and check the reading for accuracy. If a problem exists with the water meter, the water company will change it. If the meter is fine, the consumer will pay a testing fee.
