Classic motorcyclists enjoy many different aspects of their hobby, from mechanical repairs and service to restoration. But some enthusiasts of the classic motorcycle are more interested in the material culture associated with them.

One popular example is posters. Posters have been used since the very beginning of the motorcycle industry. Primarily as a means of advertising an event, posters were used in dealerships, pasted to billboards, and even placed inside bus stop shelters at one time.

Many of the posters were created by artists alongside the marketing department. Making a visual display that would be eye catching and get the most important information across at a mere glance was a challenge--and it allowed for some creativity.

Hundreds of Dollars

Today, posters are very popular amongst classic bike enthusiasts, and historically important or unique posters (such as the Steve McQueen example in the photograph which recently sold for $1952) will change hands for hundreds of dollars. Most of the major auctions will have a selection of original posters waiting for the bidder with an eye for a bargain.

Where a poster is considered very rare, and therefore valuable, it is essential to have an independent expert both value it and to confirm that it is genuine.
