If you're planning a holiday in Italy then there will be a number of things that you'll need to do. This article aims to help you cover all bases, from the practicalities to those little extras that can really make your holiday special.

First things first - have you bought yourself a good travel guide? Many people mke the mistake of booking their holiday and not purchasing a guide book until they are almost due to leave. This is a shame, since a good guide can really be invaluable.

I always think that they are actually vital to the planning stage. This is especially the case when it comes to Italian holidays. Don't forget that you're considering a trip to a vast and varied country.

If you want to make sure that you find a holiday to suit your tastes then it's important to do some background reading to identify the town or region that will serve as the best base for your trip.

Do you, for instance, want the romance of Venice? Or is it history and architecture that really interests you? Maybe you're looking for a coastal holiday. Without doing your research it can be difficult to know where to stay.

The internet is also useful in this respect. Use it wisely and you can find out more about particular regions and also read a range of reviews on possible accommodation options.

Research at this stage is certain to pay off when you come to take your holiday.

What about some of the practicalities of the planning stage. Hopefully you've checked that your passport will be valid for the trip, as well as those of your family. If not, there's no time to check like the present!

I always like to pull together all the necessary paperwork and documentation at least a week before travelling.

There's nothing worse than having a frantic search for passports, airline tickets, travel insurance, maps, accommodation bookings, car hire details and medical insurance information a few hours before travelling.

Don't be tempted to leave such preparations to the last minute. Make time to prepare properly. Italy is, in many ways, a relaxed place top spend time. Don't, however, make the mistake of imagining that you'll have a great holiday without the appropriate documents.

Have you thought about money too? Maybe you'll be using cash or travellers cheques. Just makes sure that you have them all ready in advance.

The biggest mistake that people make is leaving everything until the last possible second. Avoid the same mistakes and make sure that you plan properly.

If you do so, you can have a great holiday in Italy!
