Wouldn't You Love This Flower Bowl Arrangement in Your Home?
With a quick trip to the market, you can create a beautiful flower bowl rose arrangement for any special occasion, or just to treat yourself.
Whether you buy your flowers at a florist or your local grocery store, be careful to select fresh, crisp blossoms. Examine the petals, stems, and leaves. The stems should look as though they've been freshly cut, the petals firm, and the leaves perky.
Choose your rose colors to coordinate with your interior decor or select seasonal colors, such as yellow for Easter, pink for Valentine's Day, or red for Christmas.
Follow the simple steps to create this beautiful arrangement.
Select and Prepare Your Container
You may have a beautiful cut crystal bowl to use, but a simple fish bowl will work just fine.
We chose a clear cut glass bowl about 5" in diameter and 5" tall.
Fill the bowl about 3/4 full with fresh water and add a flower preservative if you have some.
Insert Ferns for a Foundation
You can buy ferns at any florist and most grocery stores. Many flowers are sold with ferns as part of the bunch.
Cut the ferns to a length that will fit your bowl. Be sure to have longer stems that will go to the bottom of the bowl and that the fern stems cross at the bottom and form the base for the flower stems.
Trailing ivy is a nice alternative or addition to ferns. Strip the leaves off the bottom of the stems and arrange the long stems so that they go to the bottom of the bowl.
Add Extra Greenery of Your Choice
Arrange stems of different leaves between the stems of fern.
We've used leaves from the garden for our tutorial. You might use lemon leaves, which are not hard to find. Using two different types of greens adds texture and forms a foundation for the flower stems.
Be sure to remove the leaves from the part of the stem that will go into the water. Leaves in water cause the water to discolor quickly.
Insert Rose Stems Into the Arrangement
Place 6 or 7 roses at a 45-degree angle around the lip of the vase, then add a few standing up in the center. Be sure that the ends of the stems are well into the water.
If you want a perfectly round-top arrangement, the flower stems should all be cut to the same length. For our 5" bowl, we cut the stems to 8".
Remove the thorns from the rose stems to make them easier to place between the greenery stems.
Add More Roses
Insert more roses into the center section of the arrangement.
Use as many roses as you want, either lots or just a few. Their simple elegance will make any arrangement special.
Add More Color With Filler Flowers
Insert stems of filler flowers between the roses.
Our filler flower choice is stock, which is a full, lush, long-lasting stem available in many colors from white to fuschia. Each stem has lots of blooms, so it fills the empty spots in the arrangement.
Other good choices for a filler flower are daisies, mums, baby's breath, alstromeria, small carnations, or sprigs of hydrangea blooms.
We finished off our arrangement with extra small flowers for added texture and size.
We've added sprigs of baby's breath to create a light airy look. They were included in the bouquet of roses from the market.
This arrangement will look wonderful in the center of your dining table, on a coffee table, on a desk or bedside table.
To enjoy your arrangement for as long as possible, change the water daily. Hold the edge of the bowl in one hand and gently push the flowers to one side while pouring the old water out.
Then fill with fresh water and new preservative.
This arrangement uses delicate pink roses, alstromeria, and lemon leaf.
Assorted color roses create a different look, as does the addition of various filler leaves and flowers. Adapt your arrangement to the occasion and available flowers in your area.
