    • 1). Create an online account at your bank's website. Before you can engage in online banking you must set up an online account with your bank. This is not a function that occurs automatically by virtue of opening a bank account. Visit your bank website and click on the "sign up" function to set up your online account. You will be prompted to enter your name, address, date of birth, email address and account number. You will also be asked to create a user name and password.

    • 2). Keep a ledger and update it regularly. Even though you signed up for online banking, you should still keep a separate ledger in your checkbook register or other personal finance software program to track your transactions. Record transactions in your personal ledger when they occur or shortly thereafter.

    • 3). Compare your personal ledger with your online account statements on a regular basis. Log into your account using the user name and password that you selected when you signed up. Review the transactions listed on your online account statement and compare them with the transactions that you entered in your ledger. Take note of any items that are not listed in your online account statement that should be there or any potentially unauthorized transactions. Contact your bank immediately to resolve any questions regarding the transactions listed on your online account.
