How to Remove the Exhaust Manifold Stud on a Toyota Truck
- 1). Spray the penetrating oil on the exhaust manifold studs. Since by this point you've already removed the manifold, the studs should be exposed on the front of the engine block. Make sure that you soak them in the penetrating oil as this will help loosen up any corrosion, fusion, or seizing taking place between the threads on the engine block and the threads on the bolt.
- 2). Place the box end wrench over the end of the stud so that the wrench angles away from the engine.
- 3). Thread one of the 14mm nuts onto the stud backward with the mounting flare facing away from the engine block.
- 4). Thread the other nut onto the stud so that the flare faces the engine block. The two nut flares should be facing each other at this point.
- 5). Tighten the nuts so that they are forced against each other, leaving a few threads of the stud exposed on the outboard nut (the second nut you threaded).
- 6). Orient the box end wrench so that it fits over the end of the inboard nut (the first nut you threaded).
- 7). Slide the 14mm socket and socket wrench over the end of the outboard nut.
- 8). Hold the inboard nut still with the box end wrench while you tighten the outboard nut with a socket wrench. The nuts will want to move in opposite directions. This is what you want. There are ridges on the mating surfaces of both nuts that will "lock" together.
- 9). Slide the socket wrench off the end of the outboard nut and turn the inboard nut counterclockwise with the box end wrench. The nuts should begin to force the bolt out of the engine block due to the fact that both nuts are threaded in opposite directions. If the bolt doesn't seem to want to move, you may need more penetrating oil sprayed into the bolt where it meets the engine block.

Use the socket wrench to remove the bolt all the way once it finally breaks free from the block.
