Julie Spira has written the first memoir by someone over 50 to focus on experiences with internet dating.
Her memoir is The Perils of Cyber-Dating: Confessions of a Hopeful Romantic Looking for Love Online.
Julie covers fifteen years and a sampling of 250 dates during her 30s and 40s.
Julie tells her stories with a light heart, a manner that will encourage anyone who is feeling hesitant about using online dating.
She says: "To sum it up, my own personal online adventures resulted in one marriage and divorce, another fiance, a few new friends, a lot of laughs, and a few heartbreaks.
" (pp.
9-10) In her introduction she makes her intentions clear.
"This book is not intended to scare or discourage anyone from online dating.
It is a real-life guide to embrace and navigate the World Wide Web with fun and entertaining stories, all with the goal of achieving 'Happily Ever After.
'" (p.
4) She tells her stories in such a light vein that it is easy to laugh at situations that broke her heart.
She has met men and discovered they looked nothing like their photograph, or they were 20 years older than they said, or that they were already married.
Her marriage was a painful experience of deception by a lavish spender who unfortunately messed up her finances before the marriage was over.
Resisting the temptation to conduct background investigations on the men she had met, she nevertheless was embarrassed to see that an old wedding announcement was showing up under her name on Google.
Julie developed a series of rules which she calls netiquette.
Some of them, like the valet parking ticket test, are cute and old fashioned.
She also lists a series of red flags to look for in a man's profile that indicate he means something different from what he says.
Anyone who is considering online dating will find Julie's book an encouragement to try your wings.
The Perils of Cyber-Dating is a good antidote to fear and hesitation.
The joie de vivre in these stories will inspire the most hesitant person to give the internet a try.
This book is heartening for people of all ages, but especially for seniors who may tend to be more fearful.
After decades of experience on the internet, Julie is still at it and still enjoying herself - and you can enjoy yourself too.
