Why Simone Biles is One of the Most Talented Gymnasts in History
Simone Biles was second all-around at the 2013 American Cup, then won the 2013 US national all-around title and world all-around title in her first year at the senior level. In 2014, she dominated the US nationals again, winning the all-around title by more than 4.00 points, and earning gold on vault and floor as well. She continued on to defend her world all-around title as well, begging the question, is she the best gymnast in US history?
Packed with Power:
Biles is one of the most powerful gymnasts in the sport, and is able to complete incredibly-hard skills that few others can do. She does a huge Amanar vault, and performs it with such ease and height that she's drawn comparisons to 2013 world champion on vault McKayla Maroney -- to whom she placed second at 2013 worlds. Watch Simone Biles on vault.
Biles translates that power to floor, too, where she competes a tucked double-double and a floaty double layout with a half twist at the end, a move now named for her in the Code of Points. She has energy to spare on both. (Watch Biles on floor.) On beam, she performs one of the best full-in dismounts in the world. (Watch Biles on beam.)
The 2013 American Cup:
Biless coming out party was at the 2013 American Cup, a World Cup competition held in Worcester, Ma. on March 2. While Kyla Ross and Elizabeth Price were originally the two American representatives, both withdrew due to injury. Biles and Katelyn Ohashi were chosen as the replacement athletes.
Biles made the most of the huge opportunity, placing second in the all-around to Ohashi and winning both vault and bars. It was a successful senior debut for Biles, at a big meet: Past gymnasts who've won the American Cup include Jordyn Wieber, Shawn Johnson, and Nastia Liukin.
The National Champ!:
Biles wowed once again at her first US senior nationals, winning the all-around over Ross by .200. It was an impressive comeback, since just weeks earlier at the US Classic Biles had had a very rough competition. She rose to the occasion at nationals, performing with her trademark power and showing a new level of confidence throughout the meet. In 2014, she defended her all-around title easily, leading the US team to worlds once again.
Two-Time World Champ!:
Biles continued her winning streak at the 2013 worlds, capturing the all-around title over Ross, and 2010 world all-around champ Aliya Mustafina. Biles also qualified to all four event finals, the first time an American has done this since Shannon Miller in 1991.During the competition, she earned the gold on floor, silver on vault, bronze on beam, and fourth on bars. The bottom line: Her first world championships was one of the most successful ever for a female gymnast, with four total medals, two of which were gold.
In 2014, Biles cemented her status as one of the best ever, with another gold in the all-around, as well as golds on beam and floor, and the silver on vault.
Personal Info:
Simone Biles was born March 14, 1997 in Columbus, Ohio, but currently lives in Spring, Texas. Her parents are Nellie and Ronald Biles, and she has three siblings: Ronald II, Adam, and Adria.
