Jewelry in ancient Egypt was frequently adorned with symbols. Amulets were often worn as good luck charms engraved with or shaped into such symbols as scarabs, ankhs, cartouches and the flower of life. The scarab symbolized rebirth and were often made with green stones and placed on the chests of the dead. The ankh is a symbol of life and was often made out of precious metals such as gold, silver or copper. Cartouches were worn mostly by Pharaohs, as it was considered a "magical oval," and their names were inscribed in them. The flower of life was a symbol with multiple circles overlapping each other to make a flower.

    Pectorals

    • Pectorals were large pieces of jewelry that covered the entire chest. Worn by both men and women, they were often made of gold and adorned with semi-precious stones. They were made in different shapes such as falcons and scarabs. The ones women wore sometimes had decorated round pieces that covered the breasts. Gold wiring formed the decorative shapes, which were then pounded into sheets of gold and inlaid with precious stones such as turquoise, carnelian, chalcedony, feldspar, amethyst and lapis lazuli.

    Rings

    • Rings were an important part of Egyptian culture and were worn by necessity by Egyptian men. A man's ring was used as a seal, which took the place of a signature and was legally binding on all documents. The wealth and class of a person determined how elaborate the ring was. For the poorer Egyptians, the ring was made of copper or silver. Wealthier Egyptians wore jeweled rings with intricate reliefs.

    Necklaces

    • Necklaces were most popular amongst ancient Egyptian women, and were worn by people of all economic classes. Necklaces have been found in myriad designs varying from multiple strands twisted together to single strands made into different patterns. The weight varied from those that were simple and light to those which were huge and attached to pectorals.
