Try to eat whole grains, lean meats, tons of fruits, and vegetables.
Also drink at least 8 cups of water a day.
Eats lots of brown rice, and sweet potatoes.
Feel free to add a protein shake after your workouts to help your muscles repair themselves with the aid of nutrients.
The second thing you need to know is the essentials of workout out.
If you are doing the wrong exercises you wont gain much.
Your workout should consist of mainly compound exercises such as dead lift, bench press, dips, chin ups, shrugs and so on.
Try to workout on a daily basis, have a few days off but be in the gym about 6 days a week.
Don't forget to run and do abs also.
