Tourist Attractions of Shanghai

Shanghai is one of the largest city in mainland China (over 13.2 million) and one of the largest megalopolises in the world. It has a river and sea port, serves as an important railway junction. The city is located on the Huangpu River, a tributary of the Yangtze River. It divides the city into two main parts, Pudong to the east, and Puxi to the west. Shanghai is not just another large business center with offices of international companies and numerous conferences and fairs. It also features a rich choice of tourist attractions, for example, an extraordinary park called Garden of Joy (Yuyuan), a famous Buddhist monastery of the Jade Buddha Temple (Yuyfosy) and a picturesque seafront Vaytan. These attractions allow Shanghai to be an important tourist destination. Because of the particular ambience and charm this city is often referred to as the Paris of the East.

Temple of Jade Buddha
From Shanghai downtown you can take a short trip to one of the Shanghai's Buddhist wholy places, the Temple of Jade Buddha. This is one of the most prominent landmarks in Shanghai. The structure was built in 1882 and got its name because of two sculptured images of Sakyamuni Buddha which was brought from Burma. The statute of Buddha 1,9 meters in height and over one ton in weight was made from a single piece of white jade. It is decorated with precious stones. The temple also serves as a library with 72 volumes of Buddhist texts dating to the Ch'ing period.

Joy Garden (Yuyuan)
The best known architectural and landscape attraction of Shanghai is the Garden of Joy (Yuyuan Park). At the entrance in the middle of a pond you will see a Husintin pentagonal teahouse which was a home garden of the provincial governor. The bigger garden has an area of four hectares. It has a nice layout with islands, hills and artificial lakes. This is a place to feel the atmosphere of old China. Various pavilions, artificial ponds, rocks and bridges create an atmoshpere of eternal joy. This object represents a classical style Chinese garden with a southern regional touch, dating over 400 years back. There are over forty spectacular places, such as a dragon-shaped wall, twisted galleries, and much more, which are designed to show the guests of Shanghai the most valuable things in the garden architecture of the southern China since the Ming and Qing dynasties.

TV Tower, Pearl of the Orient
The TV Tower of Shanghai is the tallest tower in Asia and the third highest (468 meters) tower in the world after Toronto Tower and Moscow Ostankino. Tourists are invited to revolving restaurants at heights of 263, 271 and 350 meters. There are bars, dance floor, space cabin with an observation deck, meetings rooms and cafes. Nowadays Pudong district is called a mirror reflecting the success of the Chinese economic development, and the Tower is the showcase of the Shanghai metropolis.

Lunhuasy Monastery
The monastery is known as the oldest and biggest attraction in Shanghai. The monastery was built by the king Tsyanshu. A tiered Lunhuata pagoda sits in its center. The monastery also invites you to its popular peach garden.

River Huanputszyan
When you come to Shanghai, you can make an excursion along the Huanputszyan river. You can enjoy gorgeous views of skyscrapers, monuments of national heroes, famous Vaybaydu bridge and Huangpu Park built before all other parks in Shanghai on one side of the river; on the opposite eastern side of the river you will see the International Convention Centre, Pearl TV Tower, new district of Pudong, and the gorgeous Yagnpu and Nanpu bridges.

Shanghai Grand Theatre
The theater is situated at the northwest corner of Renmin Square in a huge building with 70,000 square meters of space. It is split into large, medium and small rooms devoted respectively for ballet, opera, symphony, chamber music, drama and ballet opera. Shanghai Grand Theatre has an automatic mechanical stage, which seems to be the most sophisticated in Asia, and serves as a symbolic structure of the modern culture in Shanghai.

Tszinmao Skyscraper
Another attraction of modern Shanghai is a 420.5-meter-high skyscraper (88 floors) Tszinmao, which means the Golden Sprout. Tszinmao is undoubtedly one of the most known symbols of modern China. It is located next to the TV tower and has an observation deck with a magnificent view.
