    • 1). Decide whether you want to add forced induction, or remain naturally aspirated. Both choices have their pluses and minuses. Generally speaking, unless you heavily modify a naturally aspirated engine, it will make less power than adding forced induction. Forced induction is a relatively simple way to bolt on anywhere from 100 to 200 additional horsepower, without having to modify or alter engine components. Unfortunately, with forced induction you cannot piecemeal the upgrade over time; kits are sold complete, and thus require a large one-time purchase. By contrast, improving an engine without adding forced induction can be done piecemeal. You can start with a intake, move to an exhaust, and then consider additional engine work and tuning.

    • 2). Installing an intake kit, headers and a cat-back exhaust will improve intake and exhaust flow on a naturally-aspirated engine. Many quality companies make complete aftermarket kits for modern Mopar engines. Intakes replace the stock air box and tubing, and are installed with basic hand tools. Headers are somewhat difficult to install depending upon which Chrysler model you own due to potential clearance issues. Exhausts are also easy to install, but do require access underneath the car. Once these parts are installed, and the engine is tuned, it is not uncommon to see 10 to 15 percent increase in engine output along with improved fuel economy.

    • 3). Install a supercharger kit if you choose forced induction. There are multiple complete supercharger kits on the market. Generally, the installation of a supercharger is more involved than naturally aspirated modifications. You will need to remove the stock airbox, the stock air intake ducts, and the mass airflow sensor. Once these parts are removed, the intake manifold, throttle body, and fuel rail with injectors will be removed. The supercharger assembly will replace these components, and it will be powered by a belt that is connected to the crankshaft. You can expect significant power increases of anywhere from 20 to 50 percent over stock levels.
