What Properties Are Exempt From Judgments?
- Items you use regularly for work, otherwise known as "tools of the trade," are exempt from a judgment. Such items include tools used by mechanics, construction workers or maintenance technicians. Also, if you work with a computer to complete day-to-day operations of your business, the computer, printer and other operational electronics may be exempt. Tools of the trade exemptions are not to exceed $3,000 in value.
- Your car may be exempt as long as the value is less than $4,000 after any money you owe on it has been deducted. A judge may also rule for your car to be exempt if it is the only way for you to get to and from work and used to support household needs.
- Items needed to live from day to day, such as furniture, clothing and appliances, are exempt from a judgment. Some personal items, such as jewelry and art, may be exempt as long as the combined value does not exceed $1,000. You may also be allowed to keep one television, one radio and one cell phone after the judgment ruling.
- Equipment required for your or a family member's medical needs is automatically exempt from a judgment collection. This includes any equipment or property required for medical treatment and used by those with a disability. A van or car equipped for people with disabilities and valued at less than $10,000 after deducting money owed is also exempt.
