How to Make a Fake Dog Tail
- 1). Check books or photos of dogs to determine which type of dog tail needs to be made. A Pomeranian dog would have a tail with long hair whereas a beagle would have a short, smooth hair tail.
- 2). Choose the correct size for the tail. If the tail is for a costume, the size will depend on the size of the costume. An adult costume would require a larger tail.
- 3). Cut a rectangle of the fabric or fur that is the length required and twice the width. For example, 15 inches long and 6 inches wide for a medium size tail. It will be tapered when you sew the seams.
- 4). Fold the fabric or fur in half lengthwise with the wrong side of the fabric or fur facing out.
- 5). Start the seam at one end 1/4 inch from the outside edge. As you sew taper the seam line so the final stitches are at the fold on the other end. Use a pencil or marker to make a straight line from the raw edge on one end to the folded edge on the other end. Follow that line to sew it.
- 6). Trim away the excess material and turn the tail right side out. Use a pencil, knitting needle or other item to insert the fiber fill. Push it into the very end and fill the rest.
- 7). Brush the long hair tail with a hair brush so it looks natural. If it's a beagle or Dalmatian use the paint pens or craft paints to paint on spots.
