How to Overcome Pre-existing Medical Conditions with New Insurance

    • 1). Do not drop your existing coverage. If you drop your existing coverage in most states, then you might be subject to pre-existing conditions when you buy a new policy. If you cannot afford your insurance, contact your state's Medicaid office and ask for financial assistance.

    • 2). Buy a new health insurance policy within the grace period for pre-existing conditions. Most states have a "window" of time when you can purchase a health insurance policy without becoming subject to an exclusion period and without it counting against you in regard to pre-existing conditions. Normally, this time period is between 60 and 65 days.

    • 3). Apply for COBRA benefits. If you are voluntarily or involuntarily terminated from your job, or if your hours are cut and you no longer qualify for your employer's group plan, then apply for COBRA benefits. COBRA benefits will not subject you to any pre-existing condition exclusions.
