Drawing Faces
Drawing faces is one thing most people would like to be able to do. People are always doodling on bits of paper or on envelopes. Being creative is natural to us humans, it’s wired into our genes.
Most people have attempted to draw a face and capture the likeness of the person they are drawing, only to throw it away because it doesn’t turn out as they wanted. They become convinced that they don’t possess the natural talent to draw faces. In reality that drawing faces is not that difficult, it simply demands understanding a number of methods.
Drawing is only a skill, and like all skills, it can be learned with a bit of training and lots of practice. Like all practical skills practice is the key to learning how to draw faces. Whether you’re tuning up your car, making a cabinet or learning how to draw, it’s practice that will get you to your goal.
The beauty about learning how to draw faces is you can practice it anywhere. On the back of an envelope or inside of a notebook and all you need to get started is a pencil and book and you’re away.
Practice drawing from newspapers or magazines or from life by observing people around you.
Don’t be expecting your first drawings to be great or even good. The idea is that you practice.
It’s not the end result that matters at this time it’s just getting in the practice. You’ll be amazed at how fast you are able to become good at drawing faces.
At this time in your training all that matters is that you get all the bits in the right places, it doesn’t matter if they are not precise, that will come later, once we start to look in more detail at different parts of the face.
Don’t try to rush the learning process. You can’t expect to just pick up a pencil and start drawing.People’s faces are all unique and there’s no strict dimension to follow about where to position the mouth or ears.
We obviously know where the main parts of the face go but some people may have a slanted mouth for example. After you’ve been practicing for a while it’s time for you to progress a little and start to get the position of the various parts of the face correct.
This is where we need a little instruction.
Putting a face together is all about understanding a number of skills. Learning how to draw the eyes and mouth for example is a matter of practicing drawing them with a little instruction to help you.
As we come to the parts of the face we need some instruction. We need to know about how the eye is shaped and where the shadows are likely to fall.
So it’s time to study the little details that bring a mouth to life or to capture the eyes of a subject. All this is down to knowing about the different parts of the face. Once we have done some studying it’s time to get practicing again.
Bringing a face to life and making it look real might appear a difficult job when you are just learning how to draw faces, but it’s all done with shading the right areas to generate shadows.
