America's Oldest Private Girls' Boarding School

• Linden Hall, located in Lititz, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1746, making it the oldest boarding and college preparatory school for girls in the United States. Gaining admission to Linden Hall requires above average to outstanding academic achievement. The median SAT score is 2095, and the average AP Exam score is 4.5. The school accepts students in grades 6-12, and the average class size is 12 students. The school prides itself in preparing girls to become leaders in the 21st century with its "4Cs Promise": Curriculum, Character, Culture and Conditioning. Miss Porter's School

• Miss Porter's School, founded in 1843, is well-known not only for its academic rigor, but also for some of its more famous alumni, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis and Gloria Vanderbilt. Miss Porter's is a college preparatory school, and admission to its grades nine through 12 is very selective. Acceptance is based on academic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities and the student's natural intellectual curiosity. Students must take courses in art, English, computer science ethical leadership, math, science and modern languages and also participate in a sport, as well as take on community service projects. Chatham Hall

• Chatham Hall, founded in 1894, was created to educate young women of Southern Virginia and North Carolina. It is affiliated with the Episcopal Church. A small school, Chatham Hall has an enrollment of 129 and provides a rigorous academic program, developed to prepare girls for the challenges of the 21st century. Admission to the school is largely based on grades, with most new students having earned no less than a B average. Convent of the Sacred Heart

• In 1945, 100 years after its founding in New York City, the Convent of the Sacred Heart moved to its current location of Greenwich, Connecticut. More than 700 students are currently enrolled as both boarders and daytime students. The upper school curriculum includes college preparatory, Honors and Advanced Placement programs, but each student follows an individualized course of study planned with the teacher, the student and her adviser. The Admissions Committee of the Convent of the Sacred Heart seeks students whose academic backgrounds have prepared them for the school's challenging curriculum, are highly motivated, have an active faith in God and a respect for Sacred Heart's diverse community.
