"Mango" by Monica McDonnell

From the Artist: This was the fourth attempt that I made at doing the February "expressive self portrait or portrait" painting project. I am by all means not a portrait painter to begin with. I thought it would be easier for me to do since my style of painting is already expressionistic but painting yourself is no easy task no matter what style you paint in.

It is hard to break away from the need to "smooth" out the wrinkles so to speak while painting and just let yourself go.

I don't know if I succeeded in painting this using the right style but I am proud of the fact that this is the first self portrait that has ever even resembled me.

From the Painting Guide: I've been impressed with the way you've determinedly stuck with this project's challenge, and each has had a reason to be pleased with it. I know you like this one because it's your first self-portrait that resembles you; for me looking at it in terms of the project, you should be particularly thrilled with the way you've painted your hair. The strong, bold marks, the energetic way you've applied the color, and resisting the tidying up of it into identical strands of hair.
