Directions for a Simple Valance

    Valances from Tablecloths

    • Create a simple valance using a tablecloth. Attach two small cup hooks in each corner of your window, than fold a tablecloth in half diagonally and drape it over the hooks. Or even easier, simply drape the folded tablecloth over a standard curtain rod. If you have a cafe curtain rod, slip a lace runner artistically through the cafe rings, allowing it to drape gently.

    Valances from Napkins

    • For a very easy faux valance look, slide decorative napkin rings over a curtain rod, then either fold the napkins on the diagonal and slip the ends through the rings or simply loop unfolded napkins through the rings. For a variation, use clip-on curtain rings, tie one corner of each napkin into a knot and clip the unknotted end to a curtain ring. You can also take cloth napkins and lay them over the curtain rod in overlapping square or diamond shapes, no rings required. If desired, add a second layer of napkins in a contrasting color or design, with the back row longer.

    Valances from Scarves

    • Attach two small drawer pulls on each outer edge of your window frame and a larger pull in the center of the frame. Wind a scarf around the drawer pulls from left to center then right. Or, create a scarf valance by intertwining the scarf around the curtain rod, allowing it to sag in the middle and drape down either side of the window frame.

    Unique Valances

    • Use a bamboo pole or a tree branch perched on large nails or hooks as a curtain rod, then drape a baby blanket over it. Or, use a basket with cutouts for handles, nail it to the top of the window, then pull a sheer fabric through the ends. For a different type of country-style design, simply use greenery or floral swags draped over the top of the window.

Take a piece of foam core board or artist's canvas a little wider than your window, then paint or wallpaper it before attaching it to the wall with double-sided tape, hot glue or tacks. If you use the tack option, you can hide the tack heads with flat braid or any other decorative accent such as seashells or pine cones.
